Are you doing genealogical research? If you can, be sure to come into the library to use https://www.ancestrylibrary.com/ Any device (phone, tablet, computer) should work, you'll need to access the website through Atchison Library's internet.
The Atchison County Historical Society has helpfully scanned many interesting documents. You can access these from their website: atchisonhistory.org/research
The Kansas Historical Society also has partnerships with Ancestry and Newspapers.com--they do require a Kansas Driver's license. Click on the blue words above to follow the links. You can also access newspapers.com for selected Kansas newspapers. Just log into your Atchison Library account here. Call the library if you need your card number or your four-digit passcode reset (913-367-1902)
The Atchison Library has a copy Sheffield Ingalls'History of Atchison County, Kansas, but did you know that this book is searchable and easier to print online? Click the link to find out. You should be able to access this from anywhere with an internet connection--no driver's license required!
What about researching your house or another building in Atchison? The library has binders full of Kansas Historical Resource Index print-outs of information about various Atchison city and county homes. But much of this information is also available online here.
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are yet another source of information. They give a layout of properties in the early 20th century. Here is the link.
The Kansas Room continues to have our obituary file, organized by our genealogical society volunteers and other resources as shown in this video
For microfilm instructions you can watch this video.
All these links have been tested, but since the internet is always evolving, please email Liz at [email protected] if you find a link that does not work!
